Your First Time?
What was the first World Cup you remember watching?
Mark’s is 1982, Rossi taking on Brazil single-handedly; the Bryan Robson goal against France after only 19 seconds; the header that Kevin Keegan missed.
Being a little older, Chris remembers 1978 and running around the school pitch pretending to be Mario Kempes. That was also the World Cup that saw Archie Gemmill’s amazing solo effort against The Netherlands.
Share your first World Cup memory.

As with many Americans of my generation (I was born in 1974) I grew up watching baseball, American football, and hockey. Also fitting the stereotype, I played soccer for years as a kid, but never watched a match of the world game on TV.
My earliest memory of the World Cup comes as recently as 2002. It was my “awakening”. For some reason I really got into the South Korea/Japan World Cup and strongly supported my US team. What a time to be a USA Fan! So my first memory was watching (at some ungodly hour in Los Angeles) the United States absolutely STUN Portugal in the first game of the Cup for either team. Specifically McBride’s wonder header to put us up 3-0. After this I became a huge fan of the world game and never looked back.
For the record: Yes, the World Cup was in my country in 1994, and yes, I was oblivious to it.
The first professional match I ever saw was oddly Fiorentina vs Piacenza in Florence in 1995. Batigoal! My one and only EPL match in person was in 2003/04 at…..you guessed it, Craven Cottage. Mark, I did see Man U once, but it was in Los Angeles vs. Club America. Hardly a high competition match.
